Limerick's Divine Triptych

Project type

Portrait Painting

Date

2023-34

Location

Limerick City, Ireland

This powerful triptych reimagines the people of Limerick as regal, heroic figures, drawing inspiration from Kehinde Wiley and classical artists like Jan Provost. At its heart is a Black woman portrayed as a modern Madonna—defiant, dignified, and draped in a royal blue gown—framed by King John’s Castle. Flanking her are streetwise apostles and archangels in tracksuits, tattooed and divine, alongside cherubic children in GAA gear. The panels are united by Limerick’s Black Bridge and native wildflowers, symbolising the strength, beauty, and complexity of the city’s identity. This work is a bold reclamation of representation, celebrating community, diversity, and pride.
