Through the Eye's Lens: A Journey of Vision and Vulnerability

Project Type

Ceramic Sculpture

Date

April 2022

In my artistic exploration, I delve into the intricate realm of personal experience, translating the unseen into tangible forms. The series of porcelain and clay discs I have created is a testament to the transformative power of art, born from my own journey through the world of vision and vulnerability.

During a period of my life, I found myself hospitalised, battling a condition known as papilledema, where my optic nerves were inflamed, threatening my sight and altering my perception of the world. This profound and deeply personal experience became the catalyst for the series you now see before you.

The very essence of these discs mirrors the iris of my eye, a visual echo of the organ that allowed me to experience the world in a state of both fragility and resilience. I chose porcelain as my medium, not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its inherent fragility. Porcelain, delicate and easily shattered, serves as a poignant metaphor for the vulnerability of our own lives and the delicate nature of our sensory experiences.

I sought to capture the essence of my affected vision, portraying the intricate interplay between light and shadow, reality and distortion. These discs are, in a way, visual diaries of my struggle, each piece a glimpse into the world as it appeared to me during that time.

The inspiration for this series extended beyond the physical, delving into the realm of medical imaging. X-rays of my inflamed optic nerves served as a wellspring of creativity. I turned to these stark and revealing images, extracting their raw essence to infuse my work with an honest and vulnerable representation of my own experience.

As I created each porcelain and clay disc, I aimed to convey the transient nature of vision, the play of light and shadow, the intrusion of floaters, and the sensitivity to light that was a part of my daily life. The delicate textures and intricate patterns etched onto the surfaces are a manifestation of the emotions and sensations I grappled with during my journey. In these pieces, you'll find both the beauty and fragility of our visual perception laid bare.

"Through the Eye's Lens" is an invitation for viewers to contemplate the profound interconnectedness of our physical and emotional experiences. It is a testament to the transformative power of art, as it enables us to navigate the intricate landscape of our own lives, providing a voice to the silent struggles we face.

In sharing this series, I hope to foster a deeper understanding of the human experience and the role art plays in translating the intangible into a language that all can appreciate. These porcelain and clay discs are not merely objects; they are vessels for connection, empathy, and the embodiment of resilience in the face of adversity.
